European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC)

April 2021 – February 2024

The European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC) was an initiative aimed at leveraging digital solutions to reduce emissions across sectors such as energy, transport, agriculture, and construction. By establishing science-based methods to quantify emissions reductions, the EGDC supported the green and digital transitions crucial for a sustainable and resilient society.

DIGITALEUROPE, alongside key partners, led efforts within a European Parliament Pilot Project to advance the coalition’s goals. Building on its “Digital Action = Climate Action” report, DIGITALEUROPE contributed to the development of tools, guidelines, and industry insights to drive the EU’s twin transition agenda.

The EGDC was formed by the CEOs of 26 ICT companies who signed a Declaration to support the Green and Digital Transformation of the EU. The Declaration recognises the ICT sector as a key enabler for the green-digital twin transition in Europe.

Impact of the Project:

• The EGDC pilot project developed science-based methods to estimate the net environmental impact of real-life digital solutions across sectors – Energy/Power, Transport, Construction/Buildings, Smart cities, Manufacturing, Agriculture.
• Net Carbon Impact Assessment Methodology for ICT Solutions: Science-based method to calculate the net climate impact of given solutions, complemented by six sector-specific methodologies illustrating the application of the assessment in each sector.
• Case Study Calculators, which contributed to refining the Net Carbon Impact Assessment Methodology.
• Deployment guidelines to provide recommendations for green digital transformation in each of the six sectors.
