Statement on the new EU long-term budget and COVID-19 Recovery Fund

Today, the European Commission has unveiled its European Recovery Instrument, “Next Generation EU”, alongside a revamped multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027. Here is DIGITALEUROPE’s reaction to the Commission’s announcement.

Director-General of DIGITALEUROPE Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl said:

“The announcement today is an historic moment for Europe. It is clear from President Von der Leyen’s words that digital is a top priority for this Commission. We fully support her vision. Digital technologies are the backbone of a resilient society.

It is therefore puzzling that the dedicated funds for digital – the Connecting Europe Facility and the Digital Europe Programme – have not been given any extra money.

We eagerly await more details of how exactly this budget will deliver on the promise of a digitally transformed Europe. Let’s not miss this decisive opportunity.

We look forward to continuing our positive dialogue with both the Commission and the Member States as this process continues.”
