Green scale-up Circulor wins DIGITALEUROPE’s Future Unicorn Award 2022

Circulor, a British scale-up who is pioneering digital solutions to improve traceability and sustainability of industrial supply chains, is the winner of DIGITALEUROPE’s Future Unicorn Award 2022.

The Award has been delivered by Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, at a ceremony during Masters of Digital, DIGITALEUROPE’s annual flagship conference.

Cecilia Bonefeld-Dahl, Director-General of DIGITALEUROPE, said:

“Circulor is a brilliant example of how European innovators expand within and beyond European borders. It is uplifting that the power of entrepreneurship is able to overcome geo-political changes and uncertainties. Circulor is present in the UK, the EU, the US and China, which demonstrates the need to strive for an open economy with common rule-based digital and data governance. Digital technologies have the potential to help other industries save 20% of global CO2 emissions. The digital solutions provided by Circulor enable industrial supply chains to become sustainable and reveal CO2 emissions to customers and the public. Digital action is climate action.”

Douglas Johnson-Poensgen, CEO of Circulor, said:

“Thank you to EU Commissioner Gabriel and DIGITALEUROPE for this honour and recognising Circulor as a future unicorn of Europe. Tackling inherited carbon emissions in complex industrial supply chains is essential to a successful energy transition. Our digital solution enables our customers and growing networks to come together and gain the insights they need to affect real change on the path to net-zero.”

About the Future Unicorn Award

Running for the fifth year in a row, the Future Unicorn Award celebrates scale-ups from across Europe that have the potential to become the future European tech giants. It is compiled in collaboration with DIGITALEUROPE’s national trade associations.

This year, 17 companies from 14 European countries were nominated for the Award, representing a variety of digitally-transforming sectors, including digital health, smart mobility, e-learning, aerospace and more.

Besides Circulor, who was selected as 2022 winner, the other two finalists were:

  • Fazla Gida (Turkey): Inventor of a management system with AI and machine-learning technologies for donating, recycling, and reselling food surplus.
  • Zenjob (Germany): A fast-moving digital disruptor that automatically connects businesses and workers on its proprietary digital platform, like Netflix but for jobs.

After two AI healthcare scale-ups won the Future Unicorn Award in 2020 and 2021, this year’s result highlights how digital solutions tackling environmental challenges have risen to prominence, and how small companies using data and innovative technologies to monitor and lower both industrial and consumers’ footprint are increasingly in the spotlight.
