Future Unicorn Award nominee: Envelio

DIGITALEUROPE is proud to introduce Envelio, nominated by Bitkom, among the selected SMEs to participate in the Future Unicorn Award. Envelio is transforming the electric distribution grids system to facilitate the demand for renewable energy sources in the digital era.

About Envelio

Envelio is an energy software company digitizing and automatizing planning and operation procedures of grid operators to facilitate the integration of renewables and Electronic Vehicles charging points.

With the increasing share of renewables and electromobility entering the mass markets, power grids are pushed to limits. Envelio provides the software-as-a-service solution Intelligent Grid Platform (IGP) to facilitate the energy transition’s requirements for smart and more flexible energy grids, which the distribution grid operators’ IT systems and processes are not ready for, as they are dominated by inefficient and inconsistent data management and many manual process steps.

The energy software company’s competitive edge is based on the underlying algorithms of its IGP software. The IGP digitizes and automates essential processes at grid operators and completely integrates Smart Grid Technologies into grid planning and operation workflows. As a result, e.g. the time required for evaluating new connection points for distributed generation is reduced from several days to a couple of minutes.

Advice for policymakers

Smart Grid Technologies are often a cheaper alternative to a conventional grid reinforcement. However, current regulation sets strong incentives to invest in CAPEX heavy assets like new transformers or cables. OPEX-heavy measures such as the use of generation and load flexibilities are disadvantaged in the regulation. This prohibits a greater market penetration of these promising new technologies.

  • About the award

The Pan-European Future Unicorn Award aims to highlight innovative SMEs that have the potential to become Europe’s next unicorns. The award is compiled by asking all the national trade associations affiliated with DIGITALEUROPE to nominate a single SME from their country. This results in a truly pan-European selection of incredible digital companies from all sectors.

The award will be delivered at our flagship event, Masters of Digital, in Brussels on 21 February.
