Democracy Alive: The European Democracy Festival
WHAT IS DEMOCRACY ALIVE?
For three days, from April 11-13 2019, the European Movement International, in partnership with the European Parliament, is inviting you to the beautiful island of Texel, NL, to join a celebration of European democracy. We are gathering decision-makers, organised civil society, businesses, trade unions, influencers, activists and citizens to take part in the leading European democracy festival ahead of the European elections. Inspired by the Nordic tradition of democracy festivals, DEMOCRACY ALIVE aims to encourage civic engagement and increase interest in European democracy.
WHY CELEBRATE EUROPEAN DEMOCRACY?
The European Union is a manifestation of the wills of more than 500 million citizens across the continent and reaches far beyond the corridors of Brussels. However, it is a challenging time for European cohesion, which is why we need to come together to prove that European ideals are relevant to every single European in their day-to-day lives. In order to bridge the gap between us citizens and our representatives, and to reinforce trust and optimism in the European project, we want to create a space where citizens, stakeholders and our elected representatives can come together and engage in dialogue on the important issues that matter; be it on the economy, technology, the future of Europe, the environment, opportunities for the young, employment, human rights and/or the rule of law. Together we can energise citizens across Europe and greatly increase voter turnout in the 2019 elections.
WHY SHOULD DIGITAL TECH INDUSTRIES JOIN THE CELEBRATION?
We envision DEMOCRACY ALIVE as an open space where citizens, stakeholders and political groups, irrespective of their backgrounds and representations, will be able to organise their own events promoting the topics that are important to them. As the future of Europe is undoubtedly digital, it is vital that the European digital tech industries are represented at the festival with a strong presence, securing digital economy as a key issue at the highest level of European debates for the final stretch before the elections.
