FALSE.  When chargers or external power supplies remain plugged in they continue to use energy even when the products they are designed to charge are disengaged or when the battery is fully charged, even if the charger then goes into stand-by mode, which consumes considerably less energy. Reduce load consumption. After the batteries are fully charged disconnect the device as they will continue to consume energy. Buy appliances that incorporate intelligent software solutions to inform the user when the appliance is charged.

Many DIGITALEUROPE members participate in the EU code of conduct on external power supplies. This voluntary scheme is expected to result in savings of 5 TWh per year from 2010[1].
