05 July 2010

DIGITALEUROPE welcomes the EU Commission's engagement in this important area. For many years DIGITALEUROPE has been contributing to various policy processes touching upon the industry and successfully managed to find balanced, self regulatory approaches for dealing with new issues pertaining to either technology or societal evolution. With regards to the European Safer Internet Programme 2009-2013, DIGITALEUROPE members, as equipment providers and manufacturers are prepared to play their part in the creation of a safer environment for the use of the internet, including safety aspects, privacy and user rights overall and in particular for children and young adults, while at the same time fostering innovation in the mobile world. Before assessing mandatory technical or regulatory measures, DIGTALEUROPE believes in the virtues of raising awareness and empowering the consumer as important elements in the construction of the digital society, and to do so in partnership with all stakeholders, ranging from industry to NGOs and regulators.
