EICTA Position on Next Generation Networks (NGN) & Next Generation Access (NGA): "Moving Towards a Very High Speed Europe"
20 May 2008The recent European Spring Council in March 2008 confirmed the importance of Very High Speed Broadband access across the European Union with firm targets to be met by all Member States. And while the European Parliament and Commission also carefully consider how to move forward, all agree that the debate for investment in creating a "Very High Speed Europe" is not centred on the question of "if" but on "when" and most importantly "how".
The end goal in paving the way for "Very High Speed Europe" is a partnership with key private and public sector actors. This removes investment uncertainty while bridging the Digital Divide through access to High Speed Services and Networks to all European citizens, businesses and public administrations, large and small, across the European Union as early as 2010.
With this position paper, EICTA calls upon all European Institutions to take immediate political actions through the creation of public forums addressing the importance of deployment and current "best practices" across Europe in "Very High Speed Broadband" as a matter of priority. Also, on the basis of this paper Jean-Pierre Lartigue gave a presentation on NGA issues on behalf of EICTA at the i2010 conference organised by the Slovenian Presidency at Brdo on 13-14 May 2008.
