DIGITALEUROPE CONGRATULATES NEW EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS

Brussels Monday, 11 June 2010 - DIGITALEUROPE announced the election of new Executive Board Members at its tenth Annual General Assembly, where Commissioner Kroes addressed members on the action plan for the European Commission Digital Agenda, on 3 June 2010. 

John Vassalo - Microsoft, Harald Jung - Siemens, Chris Sluys - Philips, Jacek Łęgiewicz - PIIT Poland, and Turan Erdoǧan - ECID Turkey join as new members of the Executive Board, and Szabolcs Kátai - IVSZ Hungary was re-elected. John Higgins of Intellect UK was elected to replace Martin Asherton also of Intellect UK.

Erkki Ormala of Nokia and Markus Fritz of ZVEI were re-elected in their respective roles of President and Vice President.

DIGITALEUROPE members were addressed by Mrs Neelie Kroes - Vice-President and Commissioner Digital Agenda, European Commission -  who reiterated her commitment to driving forward what she described as an ‘ambitious' but ‘essential' action list outlined in the European Commission's Digital Agenda. 

"We look forward to working with Mrs Kroes and other Commissioners in addressing critical issues facing Europe, and further develop opportunities created by our industry," said Erkki Ormala, President of DIGITALEUROPE.

Mrs Kroes invited industry to continue its positive dialogue with the European Commission to ensure crucial element such as the creation of a European Digital Single Market to become a reality. 

"We must remain focused on the opportunities and strengths we have across the digital industry sector in Europe," stated Bridget Cosgrave, Director General of DIGITALEUROPE. "We urge European policy makers to work with industry to ensure we remain at the forefront as a region and global leader in challenging times," she stated.

"Solid presence of National Trade Associations including Poland, UK, Turkey, Hungary and Germany in the Executive Board adds experience and expert knowledge to the work of DIGITALEUROPE as well as in the respective member states" pointed out Cosgrave.

"We remain committed to building a Europe where ICT can and will deliver a digitally advanced society and competitive business environment." she concluded.

Members of DIGITALEUROPE's General Assembly voiced the importance for policy makers to prioritise private copy levies, the role of ICT in driving climate and energy-efficiency, e-Skills for all European citizens, infrastructure and Research and Development in ICT.
