• Empowering Girls in the Digital Era - Girls in ICT day

13 April 2018DIGITALEUROPE encourages companies from the digital sector to actively participate in global celebrations and create environment that empowers and inspire girls and women to pursue a career in technology.

International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated annually around the world with the purpose to raise awareness on the growing importance of digital skills to pursue successful professional careers across sectors. The initiative aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider studies and careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies (ICTs), enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector.

ICT sector is marked by a pressing need for a wide range of ICT talents. Companies are looking to attract and promote women, because achieving greater workforce diversity is good for business. Supporting the education of women and girls in the ICT sector is also in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 5, aimed at achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls through ICT, among others.

Last Eurostat survey (2016) confirmed that less than two in ten ICT specialists’ jobs in Europe are held by women. This gender distribution of ICT specialists contrasted with the distribution for total employment, where the genders were broadly balanced (54 % men and 46 % women). People working in the ICT in all industries develop digital solutions that have an important impact on our society today and in the future. Gender equality is crucial if we want to ensure that the solutions and applications that are currently being developed (e.g. AI or IoT) are suitable for all people. In 2016, the highest shares of female ICT specialists in were recorded in Bulgaria (30 %) and Romania (26 %), the largest gender gaps were found in Slovakia (91 % were men) and the Czech Republic (89 %).

The joint ITU and European Commission celebration of Girls in ICT Day 2018 will take place on 28 April 2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria, coinciding with the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, DIGITALEUROPE is event’s facilitator.
