• Digitising European Industry - First Stakeholder Forum

3 February 2017The World Heritage Site in Essen that was once the world's largest coal mine was the setting for the Commission's first meeting for stakeholders, following last year's launch of its Digitising European Industry initiative at the Hannover Messe. The Forum was jointly hosted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

DIGITALEUROPE's Director General John Higgins, participated in the launch in Hanover and was in the impressive conference venue in the coal mine's massive coking plant to catch up on progress. Despite moving on to a new role, Commissioner Oettinger still found time to make an impassioned speech about the benefits of European industry adopting digital technologies. Break out sessions examined aspects such as standards and reference architectures, as well as regulatory barriers.

The Commission launched a new Digital Transformation Scoreboard which reports that European companies are increasingly adopting digital technologies, but there are still big disparities between EU countries with regard to digital transformation performances. A tour of the exhibition area and the presentations on the forum stage revealed the differences in national strategies with Germany, the clear front runner, and some countries completely absent.

Encouragingly, the scoreboard also showed that the vast majority of European companies has adopted a 1st wave of digital technologies, and 64% of companies investing in digital technologies have generated positive outcomes.

Good news for DIGITALEUROPE members and their customers!
